Going Wild With Next

With Next's Summer range of children's wear featuring so many animal prints and designs, where would be the perfect location to showcase it?  At the zoo of course!  So, yesterday I attended the Go Wild With Next Blogger Event at London Zoo along with Ella, Kizzy and Freddy and a host of other bloggers.

We were treated to some nice food, entertained with a Meerkat encounter and able to view rails of the gorgeous new Next kidswear offerings.  With clothes for 0 - 16 years old, my family love Next clothing, so getting a sneak peek at the new lines is always a privilege. 

The summer season promises a nod to nostalgia with key pieces inspired by fashions of the 50s through to the 90s alongside some funky tribal prints, denims and fluros.  

For the girls, the Cuba Story is this season's hottest trend with its vibrant colour palette and punchy prints.  Featuring retro capri pants and cute shift dresses, it's a fun and bold look.  For girls preferring a touch of whimsy, the Paradise Lost range is very pretty and girly.  Distressed denims and tie-dye fabrics add a modern twist.  Style Tribe brings an urban feel with tribal influences, and features monochrome and ochre tones.  Animal motifs and clashing animal prints give an exciting safari adventure feel to this range (which is my favourite of all the new lines!)  The playsuit is gorgeous with its ethnic feel and contrasting fabrics.

The boys will enjoy showing off their street style with the 90s Bright range.  TV and musical influences of the era bring bold colours with retro tees and high tops giving a cool vibe.  Accessories such as snap back caps and sunglasses add a playful touch.  50s Smart gives a preppy mix and match trend.  Chinos, floral or striped shirts, blazers and cricket style jumpers give a smart-casual feel.  Flat caps and bow ties add to the old school effect of the look.  Monochrome makes a statement, especially when teamed with bold, clashing animal prints and geometric patterns.  Flashes of fluro add to the story.  The Shipwrecked trend brings sun faded colours, Hawaiian and photographic prints.  Tropical beach wear, straw hats and printed vests will be big hits this summer. Perfect for hitting the surf.

Overall, this summer season promises a lot of fun pieces that kids will love to wear and adults will enjoy buying.  There is a real sense of humour that keeps cropping up throughout the ranges, particularly evident in the graphic tees and with the bespectacled giraffe who appears on a lot of the individual items. 

 I have earmarked lots of clothes that I loved.  The key denims and the graphic tees will be perfect for both Kizzy and Freddy's summer wardrobes.  I love the animal inspired babygros and dungarees which will look gorgeous on my baby grandson Ted.  Let's just hope the sun shines for us!

After enjoying chatting to the buyers about the key influences of the season, we were free to enjoy the zoo.  We received a selection of summer accessories which I would have loved to try out there and then but it was absolutely freezing.  Sunglasses and sunhats were usurped in favour of wooly hats and coats! 

We visited the monkeys and the tigers, wandered through the Aquarium and the Reptile Houses and saw the penguins before returning to the car for our 3 hour homeward bound road trip.  We had a lovely, but tiring, day and are grateful to Next for inviting us along to preview the new ranges.

My New Look Wish List

As a mum of three fashion conscious girls, I am a regular in New Look.  Much of  my daughters' clothing comes from there and I enjoy shopping with my favourite fashionistas as we browse the latest styles, fashions and trends. Although they enjoy picking out items to revamp their own wardrobes and to get the latest looks, they also encourage me to treat myself to some long overdue key pieces that will bring my dress sense up to date.  So next time I find myself shopping in New Look for Kizzy's latest party dress, Ella's latest skinny jeans or Meg's latest ankle boots, I will definitely be looking out for something for myself too!

The Monochrome Look

I really love the current trend for monochrome.  It is such an eye-catching style, reminiscent of the Mod era of the 60's.  New Look have a gorgeous range of dresses, trousers, tops and accessories that can give you this season's monochrome look.  You can go all out in black and white, or add a key piece to your everyday outfits to pay homage to this latest fashion must-have. I have chosen a wishlist outfit comprising of some of New Look's new seasonal lines.

The Te Amo chevron knitted jumper is a gorgeous design, with its flattering and very fashionable shape.  Teamed with some high waisted jeans this would look great and be comfortable to wear.  The Chelsea Boots are gorgeous and a real classic that can be worn throughout the season.  The Le Breve quilted jacket is stylish and practical and would be perfect at this time of year.  I can imagine going on a walk with the family wearing this outfit.  It'd look good and feel good to wear, being casual, comfy yet totally on trend.  I think my girls would approve too!

Living In The Eighties

I haven't contributed to The Gallery for a while, but as the theme is the 80's this week, how could I not join in?  My teenage years spanned the 80's and the fondness I have for the era is deep and oozing with rose tinted nostalgia.  I met and dated the man I was to end up marrying, I gave birth to my first born son and got my first Saturday job earning £6 a week in this decade.  The music was either really cool or incredibly dire depending on your perspective whereas the fashion was on a whole just awful.  I drank lager by the half which cost 45p (in a pub I was 4 years too young to patronise).  I went clubbing and took turns with my best friend to 'pull' a bloke in order to get a lift home for free (generally in a Ford Capri).  I wore blue eyeliner and blue mascara and thought it looked good. I smoked Dunhill Menthol on the night club dance floor risking spontaneous combustion from igniting my hairspray laden, backcombed hair.  I committed many a fashion faux pas in the name of popular culture.  I wore studded belts and matching studded neck collars. I had six holes in my ears and filled them with dangly ear-rings from the market (and so began my metal allergy!)  I had coloured fishnet tights, red stillettos that made me 6' 2" tall and bleached jeans that I made myself by squirting them with Domestos.  Good times!

Leg warmers, court shoes and ankle socks...good look!

I used to love that jacket with my CND badge on the lapel.  I also had a mandatory shaggy perm at this time.  Again I have the sock/shoe combo!  What was I thinking??

The PVC mini skirt and scarf look was a staple wardrobe option for me in the 80's.  Here I have my 'Muscle' T-Shirt on, but it could just as easily have been my 'Boy Toy' one as Madonna was a bit of an icon for me at this time.

I only wish I had photographic evidence of my orange jump dress or my PVC trousers and jacket or my purple sparkly scarf I used to wear as a belt.  Such memories!

Publishing.  So we were delighted to receive the latest Froobles titles for Freddy.  The Fun Things To Make and Do book is a paperback book packed with ideas for imaginative activities for children to do and includes over 400 stickers to help with projects.  From potato stampers to sock puppets to recipes for yummy treats there are projects to excite little  creatives.  There are even ideas for practical jokes so look out for cheeky tricks being played on you!  We loved the Finger Doodles project where you can make farmyard animals using fingerprints for their bodies and stickers as eyes.  The book is colourful and filled with Froobles characters on every page.  The full colour stickers will add fun to every project. This is a great rainy day book.

Magnetic Play and Learn Counting is an ingenious book that includes magnetic numbers and objects that stick on to the board pages.  Each page has a fun sentence featuring a Frooble.  Children are encouraged to find and match a missing object and the relevant number magnet to put onto the page to complete the picture.  The magnets fit neatly  into a compartment built into the top of the book.  With missing lollipops, lions, dinosaurs and butterflies to find and count, the book offers a fun and interactive learning experience for pre-schoolers.  The illustrations are really cute and appealing and the friendly and familiar Froobles  will keep little ones entertained as they learn.  Other titles include Shapes, First Words and Colours.

Fashion Doodles With Pattern Pages

Older children with a passion for fashion will love the Fashion Doodles book.  This large size softback book lets you create cool fashion looks that can be customised using the sheets of patterned paper included.  The book is divided into sections to represent the Fashion Weeks of New York, London, Paris and Milan and focuses on the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections including dresses, accessories, shoes, hair and make-up.  Partially drawn pictures allow budding fashionistas to complete the drawings adding their own creative flair to make fabulous outfits and original looks.

The Next Mummy Blogger Event

Next have just launched their Childenswear Collection for Autumn/Winter 2012

So today me and my three youngest attended their Mummy Blogger Event at Crockwell Farm in Banbury to take a look at the range.

Next's children's clothing is suitable from newborn to age sixteen (although most stores do not stock the larger sizes so check online for older kids).  The new AW12 season's range consists of perfectly practical clothing featuring some great designs.  I love the colour palette of the collection which includes rich autumnal tones alongside monochrome pieces.

The Arthouse collection features abstract prints, intriguing textures and flashes of metallic.  The bold zebra prints and ochre tones appearing through the patterns are absolutely gorgeous.  We fell in love with the zebra print dress and cardigan for baby girls.  The Wild Bunch offers girls adorably kooky, easy to wear vintage-look denim with oversized knits and jersey tops in toffee and soft pinks.  Leopard print, stars and glitter threads add a pretty twist.  The Evening Post collection channels 1940s nostalgia with heritage fabrics, tweeds, cordrouy and cable-knits.  The Explorer and Little Explorer ranges gives boys a colourful selection of all-terrain wear to layer for an adventurous look and includes some funky Aztec prints.  A retro look comprising of jackets, peacoats and preppy chinos alongside braces and bowties creates the Rookie range for little Hipsters. The Gentleman's Club reworks country classics...think elbow patched cord blazers!  50s Revival recalls Mods with the smart casual range of skinny fit polos and cardigans.  There really is something for every taste and one of the best seasonal collections I have seen in years.  I have ear marked many key pieces for the kids and future grandbaby!

Next generously sent us a voucher to kit the kids out for the day and we really enjoyed choosing outfits.  Kizzy's soft pink skinny jeans and metallic lace top looked gorgeous.  Fred chose a rock star combo of skinny jeans and retro Union Jack t-shirt.  Ella went for the vintage Olympic tee which will be perfect for our Olympic trip in August!!

As well as seeing the clothes we were treated to some fantastic entertainment.  For the grown-ups there was a Beauty Room where a team of very talented and friendly therapists gave us massages, manicures, pedicures, reflexology and threading.  Ella and I thoroughly enjoyed being pampered by the team from Beauty With Inn while the little ones were looked after and kept busy with lots of fun activities of their own.

So while we were enjoying our beauty treatments, Kizzy and Freddy raided the cake table for mini donuts, had their faces painted, watched a magic show, danced at the disco, played on the bouncy castle and enjoyed having fun with the on hand child minders with their lovely selection of toys and books.

There was a photographer who took photos of the little ones which I look forward to seeing!  I snapped Fred during his session!

It was brilliant to meet and catch up with so many other lovely bloggers, look at the new Autumn/Winter collection and chat to the wonderful team behind the event.  We were thoroughly spoiled and had an amazing day!

A Summer Outfit From Next

Next Mummy Stylist Competition Entry

My 9 year old Kizzy is a bit of a mini fashionista.  She loves her clothes and I love seeing her dressed up and looking gorgeous.  She has an uninhibited ability to team up clothing and her original sense of style and knack of co-ordinating colours and patterns means she always looks great.

When I saw the Next Mummy Stylist competition I wondered if I could do any better if I tried to style her myself.  So this is my attempt at creating an outfit for Kizzy from Next that would be perfect for summer and do justice to my gorgeous girl!

Matching the Mood

I started by choosing a palette of colours to match her skin tone and hair colouring.  I love the spice inspired colours that are on trend this season.  They are so rich and evocative of sunnier climes.  They would look lovely on my little girl with her tanned skin and dark hair.  This mood board shows some of the pieces in Next's SS12 range that immediately caught my eye.  I love the use of bold floral decorations and the attention to detail in the cut and design of the clothing.

Warm Spice Colours

With fawns, browns and tans, reminiscent of the warm hues of ginger and cinnamon, even if the sun doesn't shine this summer, Kizzy will radiate the vibe and warmth of an exotic Moroccan street market.

I picked out these key pieces to make up my final outfit which I think is stylish, versatile, practical and would look great on any young girl.

My final outfit choice for Kizzy consists of:

The Layer Top and Scarf Set (£15) in tan, offers a mock layered look for a stylish look.  The long white vest is topped by a stripey crop top and finished with a spotty scarf.  I love how the scarf can be used to accessorise other outfits.  It can also be transformed into a bowed head band for a trendy 50's look.  The clashing patterns work well together to give an eyecatching finish.

The Slub Cardigan in Ginger (£15) is my favourite piece. The waterfall style shape is really feminine and trendy.  In the British summertime you need a good cardi to throw on when it's a little bit chilly!  I love the colour and the feature stitching.

The Belted Shorts (£13) are just perfect for summer.  The belt is gorgeous and matches the tan theme, while the pretty flower adds a girlie touch.

Gorgeous brown leather Tassel Sandals £16:  I love how these are both practical and fashionable.  Teamed with a maxi dress or with shorts, they offer a versatile solution to summer footwear.

The Corsage Straw Bag  (£9.50) is perfect for carrying around your essential bits and bobs.  Whether at the beach or at the shops, the bag looks great and the flower adds a touch of whimsy!


The outfit I have styled for my daughter would cost just £68.50.  Each piece would work perfectly in a capsule wardrobe for the summer.  Adding some extra items such as some key denims, pumps, some Chinos, a hippy style skirt, maxi dress and some printed tees would create a number of amazing looks based on the same theme.  With the £500 prize budget I could dress Kizzy for the entire season plus get a few key pieces for her siblings'summer wardrobes too*!

Footwear for Summer from Keds

They can be dressed up or down to compliment any outfit. The silent sole and lightweight feel give a real playful and feel good tone to the shoe...they make you feel young.

The beauty of the Keds Champion sneaker is in its simplicity.  Quality stitch work and moulded rubber give Keds their distinctive shape.  The attention to detail with the logo on the label and on the back of the shoe provide the designer edge.  

The Keds Champion comes with both matching and contrasting laces giving the option to bring your own style and flair.  I liked the black lace effect against the pure, crisp white shoe.  Very funky and in keeping with the trend for monochrome.

Champions are light and flexible but I did find them a little bit narrow (on my foot with the bunion!) so bear that in mind if you have wide feet and are ordering Keds online.  Other than that, they are super stylish, youthful and timeless.

Back to School Style for Mums...Seriously?!

This year it seems that not only the kids are worrying about how they look in their new uniforms as the school year begins.  Apparently the mums are spending just as much time, cash and effort on their school run outfits as the playground turns into a runway with wannabe yummy mummies dressing to impress.  Supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Elle Macpherson are being blamed for the latest trend, which is seeing mums up and down the country stressing about what they wear as they roll up to the school gates in the morning.

Shops are cashing in on this phenomena offering ideas for Back to School chic.  Now, I'm sorry, is it just me but..SERIOUSLY?!?  It's about all I can do to haul my sorry carcass out of bed at the start of the school term, let alone worry about what I'm wearing.  My hair is lucky if it gets a brush and as for make-up *snorts*.  Come tomorrow morning, my priority is to get my girls out of bed, washed, dressed, fed and delivered to the school gates in time, whilst little brother Freddy comes along for the ride (probably clad in his PJ's and clutching a piece of toast and marmite!)  How on earth would a mother find the time to pamper and preen herself before slinking into the latest fashionable attire?  School mornings are a maelstrom of frantic rushing around, searching for school bags, plimsoles and lunchboxes.  How on earth would anyone have the luxury of getting dolled up in their school-run outfit whilst this is going on?

Now, don't get me wrong, I draw the line at wearing pyjamas out of the house and I'm certainly not about to show my face in my thermal two-piece!  But for me my "school run" uniform consists of the same clothing I wear any other day...jeans, T-shirt and Conserve...sans make-up!

There is so much pressure put upon women to conform to the media stereotypes, but expecting us to doll up for the school run is one step too far.  What about focusing on our kids and letting them have the limelight as they turn up looking crisp, smart and ready to learn.  Do we really have to compete with other mums who will judge our dress sense?  If I'm not in Hollister am I less of a mother?  Does my penchant for buying my clothing from the River Island sale rack mean I will be judged by the bang on trend fashionistas?  Will I be outlawed for failure to comply with the current colour-blocking fashion?  Regardless to the answer to these questions...I honestly couldn't care less!

So I will be school running in my usual mum-uniform.  Comfortable, practical, probably a little bit covered with sticky toddler hand prints and dishevelled by the morning's chaos...but do you know what, I wear what I like.  If you don't like it...tough!!

I will dress up for special occasions, weddings, parties, hot dates with my hubby (albeit a rare event!) and fancy days out....I refuse to dress up for the school run!

Harumika for Budding Fashonistas

Kizzy was delighted to be sent a Harumika Designer Dress Form Set from Toys R Us.  She is the sort of girl who loves fashion and sketches dress designs on pieces of paper.  Harumika takes that desire to design one step further.

Specially designed mannequins allow budding fashionistas to create outfits using material without any need for scissors, needles or thread.  The cloth tucks into a special silicone slot in the back using the special stylus tool.

Harumika is a lot of fun, however I think that it is restricted by the limited amount of materials in a set.  Accessory kits, starter packs and specific outfit kits are available to buy, however I'm sure that it would be easy enough to make your own fabric squares in different patterns to use.  The other limitation is that once the dress is made there is no way of removing it or keeping it.   It has to be taken apart and returns to being fabric squares.  Harumika does have a website  where photos of outfits can be uploaded and shared with other Harumika fans.  It also has style tips, news and information about Harumika products.

Bratz...All Glammed Up!

My 8 year old daughter loves Bratz.  She loves the Bratz film, she loves the Bratz books but most of all she loves the Bratz dolls.  She loves dressing them up and shares their passion for fashion!  She was over the moon to find out that she had been sent one to test.  She was thrilled to have the chance of trying out the new Bratz 'All Glammed Up' Yasmin Doll!

The super stylish dolls have had a glamorous new make-over and have fabulous hair that is ready to be styled using their own styling tools. Special memory hair can be crimped, waved, spiral curled and straightened over and over again.  Cool hair accessories and sparkling glitter complete the look.

After we battled her out of the packaging, my Tiny Tester set to work on styling her hair. The hair styling tools were very cute...tiny replicas of the real things!

She loved curling and crimping the special hair.  The result was not quite as impressive as the illustrations on the box, but she was perfectly happy with the waves she put in Yasmin's hair.  The brush straightened the hair ready to style again.  She applied glitter and put on the hairband and was as chuffed as if she was a stylist to the stars!

Designing T-Shirts with Dylon

We've been having fun with Dylon's products Inside the Wendy House.  First we made a brilliant pair of Flamingo Pink Denim Cut-Off Shorts using Dylon's Hand Dye.  Then, using a selection of Dylon's craft products, Ella and Kizzy made personalised T-shirts.

                                   

The products were fun and easy to use.  Kizzy was a bit messy but everything washed off her hands, her clothes and the table easily with soap and water!  I possibly should have had her in an apron and put down plastic sheeting first!!  I am one of those haphazard mums when it comes to craft products!!

The paints were lovely to use and went on smoothly and easily.  The colours were vibrant.  Kizzy loved the 3D paints which added an element of fun to the proceedings!

The dyes are fixed using a hot iron for 1-2 minutes, and the fabric remains soft. 

It's a lovely idea to let your child get creative and design their own T-shirt.  Kizzy is very proud of her creation.  (The T-shirts were from Primark.  Ella's cost £1 and Kizzy's was £1.90.)

Making Pink Cut-Off Shorts with Dylon

We were lucky enough to be  sent a selection of goodies from Dylon to try out Inside the Wendy House.  One of the products that was included was Dylon's Fabric Dye for Hand Use.  They come in 24 vibrant shades including Sunflower Yellow, Tropical Green and Flamingo Pink.  Each sachet contains enough dye to transform smaller items.  You just need to add water and salt to permanently change the colour of your chosen items.

With the economic climate taking its toll, and with the importance of trying to re-use and recycle  in order to help the environment, brands like Dylon can help by revamping any old, tired wardrobe.  Clothing that may have been thrown out can now be given a second lease of life.

With the help of Dylon's Flamingo Pink Dye, we transformed a pair of old white jeans into a fun and funky pair of cut-off denim shorts for Kizzy.

She enjoyed helping me and it was a very easy process.

The colour was vibrant and bright, and the dye took really well.

Mini Club Clothing

Freddy is a lucky boy!  He has been sent a gorgeous Springtime outfit from Mini Club.  Mini Club is a Mothercare clothing range stocked exclusively at over 300 Boots stores.  It offers contemporary, stylish and affordable clothes for kids aged 0-6 years.  Designed for children who love life, they are made for playing in, growing in and living in.

Fred was sent a pair of long denim shorts with a belt, a gorgeous T-shirt with a cool nautical design, a striped hoodie and a pair of green and white checked swimming shorts.  The colours are bold and bright, bang on trend for this season.  The designs are fun with strong graphics and the fabrics are top quality.

Today, as it is Mother's Day, my little man is dressed in his new outfit.  He looks adorable!  The 18-24 month size is plenty big enough for him at 20 months.  I love the quality of the garments and the attention to detail is great.  The shorts are 3/4 length on Fred.  They are made from a soft denim and have an adjustable waist band.  The pockets on the knee are really trendy and the canvas belt is a lovely addition.  The T-Shirt transfer is well applied and the seams are stitched well.  Its a great quality cotton that is tumble drier safe.  The hoodie is gorgeous with bold stripes of orange and stone with pale blue detailing.  It zips up and looks so comfy on Freddy.  The green and white long swim shorts have a drawstring waist band and will be perfect for when the summer sun returns!
