For Freddy - Now You are Six

I have a boy.
A loving boy.
A caring boy.
A boy that loves Minecraft, Harry Potter, video games, bubbles and swords.
A boy who loves singing and knows how to dance.
A boy who likes being a vegetarian because no animals die.
A boy with so much love in his heart for his family and friends.

I have a boy who says he doesn't like reading - but tries to read every word he sees.
A funny boy.
A clever boy.
A boy who doesn't run fast but won his skipping and egg and spoon races on sports day.
A boy who can hula hoop with three hoops!
A boy who can build tall towers - then gleefully smash them down.

I have a boy that has brought so much love, fun and laughter into our home.
A good boy.
A happy boy.
A boy who is a gift to his '40 something' mum and dad.
A boy that gives hugs, kisses, high fives and fist bumps.
A boy that tells silly Knock Knock jokes that make perfect sense to him.
A boy who loves Alton Towers, Trentham Gardens and Jurassic Golf at the garden centre.

I have a boy who loves play areas but is oh so scared of heights.
An extremely sensitive boy.
A deep thinking boy.
A boy who hates burping and obsesses about his health.
A boy who feels things so deeply.
A boy with so much empathy.
An old soul in a little boy.

I have a wonderful boy.
A beautiful boy.
Our perfect boy.

Freddy is 5 Today!

It was 5.56pm on July 9th 2009 that I gave birth to my son Freddy.  Weighing in at 9lb 10oz, this little boy was destined to bring a whole new dimension of love and joy into our hearts.  With three doting big sisters and a big brother, he has been surrounded by affection and attention from the very start.  We have seen him develop into a beautiful, confident, outgoing little lad, overcoming every hurdle with his determined spirit.  He makes us laugh with his cheeky sense of humour, entertains us with his singing and dancing and fills our days with laughter, pride and fun.

He loves watching videos on YouTube (he knows the words to Dumb Ways to Die in both English and Italian).  He likes Nerf Guns, wooden swords and water pistols.  He enjoys Wii Sport boxing and playing Plants vs Zombies on my phone.  He likes his sandpit, swing and slide and playing out doors. His love of strawberries, grapes, egg whites, cheese pizza, tomato soup and porridge stops me worrying about how fussy he is when it comes to eating a hot meal at dinnertime  His reading, writing and drawing skills have just taken off after a very slow start (my age and experience has taught me not to worry - he'll get there in his own time!) Freddy loves to join in with things and makes friends with other children wherever we go. He loves to snuggle with me in my bed in the mornings and the feel of his soft hair against my cheek, as he nestles close to me, remains one of my favourite moments of the day.

Having a child in my forties, I worried about whether I'd be able to keep up with him, but this boy keeps me young at heart and on my toes. He has reminded me of what is important in my life, has taught me so much about myself and has consequently given me a more relaxed outlook on things.  He is an absolute blessing and I am eternally grateful that I get to be his mummy!

Happy 5th birthday to my little man!

Freddy's birthday party with four generations of our family!

birthday

Freddy's birthday is next week, but as his big brother will be on holiday and his big cousin Tom will be emigrating to America, we had an early family birthday barbecue to celebrate last Sunday.  My guest list included all the family - meaning that all four generations (aged between 1 and 81) would be together for the first time ever.  I was so happy to be able to pull this off, especially as this was Tom's final visit before he heads off to make a life for himself in Georgia with his lovely American fiance. I will miss him so much but am so proud of him for achieving his dream.  It was a nice opportunity for everyone to say their goodbyes.  He stayed with us for four days around the barbecue and I cherished every moment and may have drank a few too many beers and shed a few tears!

Freddy's party had a construction theme.  His birthday cake was going to be a three tiered chocolate cake with diggers on top, digging up the top layer of sponge, but Freddy was adamant that he wanted a vanilla tray bake!  So I put my thinking cap on and topped the vanilla frosting with crushed Oreos and decorated the cake using Playmobil construction workers.  Cadbury's Pebbles made good rocks for the wheelbarrow and bucket! It was a very easy birthday cake and I'll use the idea of making a tray bake as a base for a themed scene again.

I bought some sand toys; buckets, spades, a wheelbarrow and a big truck, which were used to hold crisps, biscuits and sweets.  The little ones loved digging for the goodies with the spades!  A tool box made a good holder for some of the snacks and I used tin cans decorated with a construction themed label to hold cutlery.  We had a veggie barbecue served with an assortment of salads and bread.  We had construction themed plates, cups and napkins, and we had balloons with diggers and trucks on them to decorate the gazebo. Freddy's JCB toys, die cast vehicles and toy trucks were dotted around.  The theme worked well and I was pleased that everything came together.

My parents are now both in their eighties.  They have a total of 13 grandchildren and two great grandsons.  It's been years since they have had all their grandchildren in one place at the same time and the great grandsons had never met before.  Ted is my eldest son Joe's little boy who is 18 months old.  My adorable great nephew Baby Michael is my niece's son and has just turned one.  These newest additions to our family mean we have four living generations, which is a great honour. Seeing everyone together made my mum and dad's day.

With everyone together we had to try and take a family photo of my parents with the grandchildren and great grandchildren.  One of my nieces had left by this point, but 12 out of 13 wasn't bad going!  Unfortunately Freddy decided not to pose and little Ted was not going to cooperate and run off half way through.  However, this is my favourite shot of our slightly chaotic family - it really tells a story!

The kids loved playing in the newly refilled sandpit, blowing bubbles and bashing the pinata. I had ordered a truck pinata but it was out of stock, so I got a fire engine instead. It was well and truly bashed and eventually spilled its contents of sweeties to the delight of the little ones.  Thankfully, bar a little shower, the sun shone.  It was a lovely day and I loved having my children Joe, Megan, Ella, Kizzy and Freddy all together at home.  It makes me feel whole again.

Once most of the guests had left, I remembered that I hadn't cut the birthday cake!  So Freddy blew out his candles watched by his Nana and Grandad, his sisters, a couple of Ella's friends (who Fred adores and wanted to invite), two cousins Tom and Kate and Baby Michael. (At least it meant more cake to go round!)  He had a wonderful day!

We'll be celebrating some more next week for Freddy's actual birthday.  He's a lucky little boy!

PS. Thank you to Freddy's Auntie Debbie for the fantastic Angry Birds onesie that Freddy wore all day long!

Getting to Grips with a Rope Swing

With a little bit of sunshine managing to breakthrough at the weekend, Freddy took full advantage of the garden.  Dressed in his LEGO Movie onesie and his customised Skribbies hi-tops, my little man decided to master the art of the rope swing.  The girls, when they were younger, never really managed to do much more than hang off it clinging on for dear life with both hands, but Freddy had bigger plans.  Climbing up the ladder to the platform of his slide and swing set, carrying the rope with him, he launched himself off the edge with the rope wrapped around his waist.  Like a miniature Tarzan he flew through the air, coming perilously close to the frame of the play equipment he had jumped off, but undeterred by the dangers of his new game.  He has continued to experiment with his rope swing and it has become his garden toy of choice.  Sometimes he lands in a heap but springs up declaring "I'm OK!" before brushing himself down and doing it all over again.

It is so wonderful to see Freddy back to his old self, healthy, happy and full of energy enjoying the garden and the great outdoors.  After so many weekends being written off due to ill health, I am looking forward to making the most of the improving weather and enjoying some family fun!

What Fred Said This Week

Another week of Fred-isms has kept me entertained and delighted, as I get to understand the world according to Freddy.  I love his take on things and the way he articulates himself.  He is learning so much and his imagination is developing beautifully.  4 is a great age!

At bedtime.

Me: Close your eyes.
Freddy:  Is that so the dreamworld can come into my eyeballs?

About Jesus.

Freddy:  Who's Jesus?
Me: He's a man that some people think is the son of God who did lots of good and kind things for people.
Freddy:  Is he Mike the Knight?

On Diets.

"You could get skinny if you go to the doctors for a hoperation to take off your skin, take out some bones and put some skinny skin back on."

Personal Hygiene.

"I smelt something today.  I thought it was a fart but it was just someone's stink."

On School.

"I had a really good day.  I didn't even fall over."

On his family.

"Mummy smells of bananas and custard.  Kizzy smells of chair fluff.  Ella smells of love and rainbows!"

On beards:

"The spikes on daddy's face make my chin feel all scrumbly!"

On having his photo taken:

"I don't want to smile, I want to look cool!" (the resulting photo really is pretty cool!!)

On Injustice:

Freddy came in crying indignantly and saying Kizzy was being mean to him.  I asked what happened and he said Kizzy had told him loudly to 'Stop It'.  I asked him what he was doing for her to shout at him like that and he replied "hitting her with a stick!!"

In the Queue at Morrison's we were behind a soldier in uniform.

Freddy: Why is that man wearing those clothes.
Ella: Because he is a soldier.
Freddy:  Does he fight baddies? (followed by very loudly) IS HE A NINJA??!!

Thankfully the soldier thought it was very funny :)

What Fred Said! #SaidItSaturday

This bloghop from New Mum Online celebrates the wonderful things that our little ones say, so we never forget them!  Freddy is now 4 and says so many wonderful and funny things that I just had to link up.

My favourite thing this week was actually something that I thought was really clever.  My spatial awareness is utterly useless and so I was very impressed when Fred asked me:

"When we are upstairs do we walk on the downstairs ceiling?"

I thought that was pretty smart of my boy!

Other than that, He has decided to use the word 'accidentally' instead of 'actually' in his sentences.  Even when you correct him, he tells us that he thinks it sounds better that way!

He is a big fan of Austin and Ally on the Disney Channel and keeps telling us that he sounds like Austin before breaking into his rendition of Oxygen from Teen Beach Movie with lyrics that go:
"I wanna to be the ocean to your shore, I wanna be the moo noo a na naw." (Who needs real words when you are 4!!)  He actually loves music and growing up in a house where his older siblings play their tunes has influenced his tastes.  He is, as I type this, singing "Nodiggity!"  Other favourites include Hoody Allen, The Killers, Walk the Moon and Passenger.  I love hearing him singing out loud with no inhibitions.

Some of Fred's language has verged on colourful.  For example Freddy shouted out something that sounded like "Penis Shitness!"  We're not entirely sure what he meant to say or if indeed 'penis shitness' was his intended comment, but needless to say we all struggled to keep a straight face!

But my favourite Freddy-ism of all time has to be when he was telling me how he thought his sisters looked:

"Ella is beautiful, Megan is gorgeous and Kizzy is fabulous" he said.
So I asked, "What's Mummy then?"
"Mummy is fattiness!" he replied.
I really shouldn't have asked!

Freddy's Playmobil Pirate

Ahoy there me hearties!!  Freddy has got a new Pirate toy from Playmobil to welcome him into the Playogolist programme which we are proud to be a part of!!  The detailed little figure comes complete with a treasure chest, a monkey, a gun, a sword and a lot of gold doubloons!  Everything a pirate needs!

Playmobil

Here is Freddy talking about his new toy and playing a little game with him.  I love toys that inspire imagination in young children, and Playmobil does just that.  We can't wait to add to our Playmobil collection.  I can just imagine the fun Freddy will have creating scenes and acting out stories!

Playmobil is currently hosting a competition to find a child aged between 3 and 10 to be the voice of Playmobil in their Christmas ads.  To enter simply make a film of your child talking to camera and send it to PLAYMOBIL@onechocolatecomms.co.uk as a video file or YouTube link by August 4th. Don’t forget to include the entrant’s name, age, telephone number and address.

The Gallery...Extreme Close Up!

toddler, glasses, eyesight, Specsavers, Mr Bump

Freddy's glasses have become a big part of our life.  They are not proving to be an easy addition to the family.  Repairs, adjustments, running battles and spec throwing are now commonplace occurrences. But we persevere in hope that we can 'fix' the sight in his left eye.  They are the subject of my Gallery picture, shot in extreme close-up, a reminder of this phase in my little boy's life.

Funny Faces

My funny boy makes me laugh.  He is a real joker who knows that he is the centre of attention in our family and milks it for all it's worth!  He makes us all smile and everyday is a whole lot brighter with him in our lives. He really is my sunshine on a rainy day :)

Freddy's First Portrait

Today Freddy took to his paper and felt tips as he usually does, scribbling away with pure abandonment.  Suddenly he ceased his chaotic administering of pen to paper and drew a picture of 'daddy'.  His concentration and commitment to producing the portrait was so beautifully executed.  I grabbed the picture away before normal felt-tip service resumed, and popped it in my ever growing pile of my children's treasures!

Freddy's Portrait
I think it bears a striking resemblance to Ian...or maybe it's more Teenage Mutant Hero Turtle.  Either way I love Freddy's first portrait and hereby share his artwork with the World Wide Web!
