Cadbury Opens the Door to Christmas

This week I stocked up on Cadbury advent calendars for my little ones in readiness for December 1st and the countdown to Christmas. Advent calendars really do signal the start of the excitement of the season with days counted down marked with a tasty morsel of Cadbury chocolate.

This year, Cadbury are using the advent calendar theme in their Christmas ad campaign, but instead of cardboard windows and mini chocolate pieces, they are using 24 Cadbury purple trucks filled with boxes of goodies to deliver joy to the nation. Each truck represents a different door of the advent calendar, which is brought to life as the fleet departs to different locations across the UK.

The ad launches on November 7th and promises to become a festive family favourite. Set at the home of Cadbury in Bournville, the ad shows the trucks being filled with Christmas cheer before taking the advent calendar formation – even Santa himself pops in to check on the preparations.

The journey of the giant Cadbury Advent Calendar continues to the sound of the Thunderbirds theme tune. The trucks pass through famous British landscapes on their journeys to deliver joy to the nation. Who knows where the trucks will open their doors?! Near me I hope!
You will also have the chance to see the Trucks deliver their joy through a series of 20 second spots that will capture the magic that lies behind the truck doors as they arrive at their destinations throughout December. (These will be available to view on TV, VOD and online platforms from December 5th.)
Keep up to date with the festive fun at www.facebook.com/cadburyUK.
Or join in the chat on Twitter @CadburyUK with the hashtag #freethejoy.

My Milk Memories #MilkDrinkersMilk

There are so many drinks marketed to children that are made using artificial sweeteners, colourings and flavourings, or which are packed with high amounts of sugars. None of which are good for your little ones to consume in excess. Experts are constantly telling us about the dangers of high sugar consumption and we all know the horror stories associated with chemical sweeteners. Thankfully there are alternatives to these highly coloured, sweetened and flavoured drinks that kids will still enjoy drinking. One such drink is milk.

When I was a little girl, milk was still delivered in pint bottles from the milkman - two a day, but three at the weekend when mum would make a big rice pudding to eat after our Sunday roast. It was one of my jobs to go and fetch the milk from the front doorstep. You had to do it early or the neighbourhood blue-tits would come and peck through the silver tops to pinch the cream on top. The tell-tale little holes would let you know if you were too late. After the milk was finished and the bottles were empty, they would be rinsed and returned to the doorstep for collection - recycling at its best. Silver foil lids would also be washed and put into the arts and crafts box ready to be stuck onto a cardboard box to make a robot's eyes or the buttons on the control panel of a rocket ship.

A glass of cold milk is something that is just so quintessentially reminiscent of childhood. An after school drink of cold milk and a homemade jam bun would quench your thirst and fill you up until teatime, giving you the energy to play outside until mum called you in to wash your hands.

On a cold winter's evening a mug of warm frothy milk for supper was just the thing to tide you over until morning, aiding a peaceful night's sleep. I still remember my mum's frother - a long handled, metal disc with holes in that was plunged up and down into a tall pyrex beaker. The milk would froth up a treat under my mum's hand, making a foamy drink. A sprinkle of cinnamon on top made it seem very sophisticated.

As a child of the seventies, I remember the days when everyday at playtime we were given a small, foil topped, glass bottle of milk with a straw. Unfortunately for us, the crates were often left outside all morning, which on a cold day was not a problem. But in the summer, the heat would cause the milk to get warm and start to spoil. It really was the worst thing. Thankfully, the girl sat next to me seemed to quite like milk on the turn and she would happily drink it for me, meaning I could show my teacher my empty bottle and be allowed out to play. My eternal thanks goes to my pal Sonia! It wasn't long before the free school milk stopped, giving the nickname 'Thatcher Thatcher Milk Snatcher' to our infamous PM. To be honest, given the food safety standards in play during the seventies, she may have done us all a great favour (but I doubt my mate Sonia would have agreed with that).

milk drinkers

Nowadays, much has changed, but one thing that remains the same is our national love of milk. The glass bottles that the milkmen delivered daily have been replaced by convenient family sized plastic bottles from the supermarket, which we pick up with our weekly grocery shop. Cravendale is the brand that I trust most, to provide my children with the freshest, purest milk available. Each glassful tastes as fresh and clean as the first.

Freddy had a fantastic few days last month when his cousins Addy and Dylan came to stay at our house. Keeping three little ones fed and watered is made considerably easier by having a couple of 2 litre bottles of Cravendale chilling  in the fridge. When playing hard, little ones sometimes need refuelling. When they got hungry, a cold glass of milk and some cut up fruit or some quartered peanut butter sandwiches filled them up perfectly, providing them with a satisfying and nutritious snack. Seeing the three of them sat together, in the midst of a dressing up game, glugging down their milk made a lovely picture of childhood.

My nephew, 5 year old Dylan, is the biggest milk drinker ever. He can't get enough of the stuff and will happily gulp it down by the glassful, giving himself an impressive white milk moustache in the process. I was glad I had stocked up on Cravendale! A love of milk definitely runs in his family because his big sister's first word, and the word she repeated incessantly as a toddler, was 'Moo' - her word for milk. She was permanently attached to her black and white cow print sippy cup, shouting for her much loved moo and supping cup after cupful of the white stuff. It certainly must have given her a good start in life - as she is now at Oxford University training to be a doctor!

Cravendale

Cravendale is dubbed the 'Milk Drinker's Milk' because of its pure, fresh taste which is great for drinking. It is by far our favourite milk on the market, which I put down to the fact that it has been filtered giving it that all important long lasting freshness. It stays fresh for seven days in the fridge so thankfully there is no fear of Freddy;s milk ever tasting prematurely cheesy (unlike the school milk of my childhood!)

Old El Paso Stand 'n' Stuff Tacos

Old El Paso Stand 'n' Stuff Soft Taco Kit range is great for quick 'n' easy midweek meals that the kids will love. Easy to fill, hold and eat, they bring the vibrant flavours and fun of Mexican cuisine to hungry families looking for something a bit different to eat. I was sent some to try out.

Mexican

They are so easy to make in three simple steps:

Cook the mince using the seasoning in the kit - I use Quorn mince to make them vegetarian.
Prepare the fillings - we use salad, grated cheese, nacho cheese sauce, refried beans and salsa ( a sachet of salsa is included in the kits.)
Fill your taco and enjoy!

Old El Paso's Stand 'n' Stuff Soft Tacos

It's such a fun meal, sitting together and filling the soft tacos with the fillings of your choice. They are so much easier to make and eat than the crunchy tacos, making them easier for the kids to manage.

Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment - Our Review

Last weekend we headed off to Birmingham to review the wonderful Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment  at the Barclaycard Arena.

The show features four stories: Toy Story 3, The Little Mermaid, Cars and Frozen, introduced by Disney favourites Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy. With exquisite costumes, stunning scenery, amazing choreography, special effects, pyrotechnics and original Disney music, the magic of Disney is brought to life on the ice. The story takes us from Andy's Toy Box to Under the Sea to Radiator Springs to Arendelle. What a journey!

Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment

The Toy Story routine was beautifully done, telling the tale of when Andy goes to college, leaving his beloved toys behind. Their adventure at Sunnyside and their elaborate escape is brilliantly executed and includes Woody taking to the skies on a kite and Lotso being picked up by a garbage truck driver's giant hand. Highlights included the toy soldiers with their synchronised routines and the hilarious love story of Barbie and Ken. It is touching, heartwarming and exciting with lots of laughs thrown into the mix.

The Little Mermaid is one of my favourite Disney films. I love the story of Ariel and her fishy friend Flounder, and Ursula the Sea Witch is a magnificent villain. I loved seeing the underwater kingdom brought to life on the ice with flowing fabric waves and intricately detailed dancing fish. The ice dancer portraying Ariel was perfect for the role, telling the story of how she fell in love with Eric, made a pact with the evil Ursula and eventually broke her spell with a kiss from her prince.

After the interval, we were treated to one of my favourite parts of the show. The Cars from Radiator Springs came to the rescue of Minnie and Mickey's new roadster that had broken down. The full size vehicles are so beautifully made and look great as they drive and spin across the ice. Mater the Tow Truck and Lightning McQueen are brilliant with their fully articulated eyes and talking mouths. We were all enthralled with the four wheeled characters and loved seeing Mickey and Minnie drive away in the pimped up roadster.

Frozen is still the part of the show that everyone is excitedly waiting for and when Anna and Elsa step on to the ice, they deliver with a musical extravaganza. When Elsa brings winter to Arendelle, special effects see snow fall from the sky and fountains freeze before your eyes. Elsa's castle that appears during 'Let It Go' number is spectacular and the arrival of Olaf the snowman received the loudest cheer from the crowd. The ice dancing was exquisite and of the highest standard, and the tale is told with real heart.

Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment

This is the perfect show for families to watch together. Seeing a Disney on Ice show guarantees you are in for a treat. With amazing performers, music, costumes and effects, the show is simply stunning. My family love it! It is a perfect show for younger children, introducing them to ice dancing and live performance, with characters and songs they know and love.

To find out when Disney on Ice is coming to a town near you and to book tickets visit: www.disney.co.uk/disney-on-ice/worlds-of-enchantment. The show runs until January 3rd 2016 with Belfast, Dublin, Sheffield and London dates available.

Creative Christmas Gifts - Make It Sunday

Photobox has carried out some research and discovered that over 2 million Brits will have already started hand making festive gifts to give to their loved ones at Christmas. October 25th was dubbed Make It Sunday, marking the weekend that UK gift givers started lovingly creating personalised and hand made gifts. Staring early and being organised is a great way to keep Christmas stress to a minimum.

The trend for personalised gift giving sees an average of £15.21 being spent on each gift with up to 14 hours of work going into creating them. Two thirds of shoppers will go online to order a personalised gift, which will be appreciated twice as much as something bought on the high street. 72% of people surveyed said they would prefer something that has been made especially for them and we feel four times more satisfaction giving them. So it's really a win-win situation all round!

Gifts made using a photograph come out as the top choice when it comes to personalised gifts. After all, who wouldn't want a present with a loved one's face, an adored pet or a favourite place printed onto it!?

Photobox have sent me some credit so I can join in with the 'Make It Sunday' phenomena, creating some lovely gifts and joining in with the 'Make It' craze. From framed prints to teddy bears to bags to mugs, there is a huge choice when it comes to personalised photogift.

One of my favourite gifts to give grandparents at Christmas is a photo calendar. Featuring up to 12 pages of photographs of the grandchildren, it's a gift that gives all year round. Photobox have a selection of calendars including desk calendars to poster calendars to A3 calendars to suit all tastes. They can be purchased online and then created within one month, taking off the pressure of doing them there and then.

A Spooky Game Idea using a Glow in the Dark Mutant Zombie Hexbug

This Halloween, Freddy received a cool glow in the dark Mutant Zombie Hexbug Nano, boxed in its own coffin, so he could enjoy some glow in the dark party fun!  The little black Hexbug has a glow in the dark skeleton on its back, which glows once the lights are off.

Hexbug, Halloween

We love Hexbugs! The bug-like miniature robotic toys scuttle about randomly, bang into things and bounce off in different directions. They are quite mesmerising to watch.

Making the most of their random movement, Hexbug have devised a game, which we played at Halloween. The Hexbug is set loose onto a game board featuring various different spooky images. Each image is worth a certain number of points, and players accrue points when their Hexbug runs across the images. Highest score wins. This game can easily be modified for any time of year and is a fun way to play with Hexbugs.

Hexbug

Freddy had lots of fun with his glow in the dark Hexbug. The game was good as it encouraged him to use his maths skills to tally up the points when the Hexbug ran over the ghost, pumpkin, spider's web, cat, skull or bat.

Halloween, Hexbug

He spent a lot of time chasing the runaway bug as it left the game board and made off across the laminate floor, but that added to his fun. Having a barrier around the board would have avoided this from happening for any serious game players.

Halloween

The Zombie Mutant Hexbug Nano is a great little collectible toy to add to your Hexbug collection. The glow in the dark skeleton works really well after being exposed to a light source for a short while and looks really cool when scuttling around with the lights off.  The coffin is a really nice touch for both storage and display. It is made from plastic with a broken lid that shows the Hexbug inside.

Because I'm Happy!

We've all sung, danced and clapped along to Pharrell Williams' famously catchy song Happy. Well now we can read along to it too! The iconic tune is now a children's book, packed with colourful fun photos of children to accompany the lyrics.

We were sent a copy along with some props so that we could enjoy our very own happy party to celebrate the book's release. This was perfectly timed as Freddy's cousins were staying at our house, giving us the chance to have some fun together.  We got in some drinks and snacks, put the song on repeat and let the kids have fun as they explored the book. They were definitely very happy!

Happy, Pharrell Williams, party

The Happy! book is really quite unique, exploring what it means to be happy in a picture book format, perfect for young children to enjoy. It inspires a child's imagination and creativity, reinforcing the importance of happiness and being true to yourself.  The images show children riding a hot air balloon going up into space, dancing with clouds or rocking out as a band playing cardboard instruments or literally raising the roof of a building. They give a fantasy interpretation of the song's lyrics, exploring the theme of having fun together. Children of all cultures are included and they exude joy as they play imaginary games together. It really is a celebration of childhood, imagination and happiness.

Pharrell Williams

Young children will love the infectiously joyous imagery and the catchy text, whereas the kids able to read for themselves will enjoy reading the familiar words, building confidence and independence in their reading ability. The book is aimed for children aged between 3 and 7 years, but will be enjoyed by any fans of the Pharrell Williams' song, whatever their age. You can't help but smile :)

Penguin books, happy

Happy! is available now RRP £10.99 in hardback picture book published by Penguin Random House.
