How to prepare children for when the clocks go back

The nights are getting longer and at 2am on October 26th the clocks will be going back, This extra hour can often affect the delicate sleeping patterns of pre-school children and for many parents this will mean that rather than enjoying an extra hour in bed, they will be woken up by children getting up even earlier than normal. I still remember 4 am wake ups after the clocks going back with my eldest son!

Putting children to bed can be hard enough without the complication of having the clocks change twice a year. Children often don’t understand why it gets light earlier in the morning and why they have to go to bed at a different time.  It can all become very confusing!

This video discusses bedtime routine research findings, conducted on behalf of In the Night Garden. Sleep expert and founder of Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic, Mandy Gurney talks about the importance of wind down time and bedtime routines and the simple changes you can implement in the run up to the clocks changing so your children can be prepared.

Reading as part of the Bedtime Routine

Fairy Non-Bio, with the help of Timmy Time, have come together to discuss the importance of reading to your little ones at bed time to help them sleep.

According to new research commissioned by Fairy, 8 out of 10 mums read to their children every night at bedtime.  The survey of 1,000 UK mums (with children aged up to seven) took an in-depth look at bedtime routines.  Whilst dads are playing a much bigger role in parenting, this research uncovered that bedtime is still mostly the woman's domain. (Although in my house Daddy is solely in charge of bed times and gets Freddy off to bed every night.  He still enjoys sharing a book with him at bedtime though!)

Working Mums Make Bedtime Work

61% of working mums said that they have to rush through the routine in order to get their child into bed on time, but that bedtime reading remains a priority for them. In fact, 16% of mums would shorten bath time in order to have time to read with the average amount of time spent reading to their children being 11 minutes.

Reading clearly plays a key role in establishing successful bedtime routines and is helpful when settling down children for the night. Other reasons given for reading to kids at bedtime include aiding their development, encouraging an interest in books and bonding with children.

Bedtime Routine: Successful or Stressful?

35% of parents said that their child tends to settle down quickly and easily most nights, with a further 43% saying this is the case 3 or 4 nights of the week.  Unfortunately, bedtime isn't always easy and some parents struggle with the nightly routine. 1% of mums find this part of the day is stressful, and 2% admit to dreading bedtime.

Finding the right bedtime routine that works for both parent and child is important and incorporating reading is a great way of helping children to settle.  Snuggling up under a blanket and sharing a good book is a lovely, calming way to end the day.

Fairy's Timmy Time on pack promotion

Fairy knows how important reading is - it is an important step in a child’s development, boosting speech and vocabulary and teaching essential literacy skills.

CuddleUpPets

What do you get if you cross a cuddly blanket with a cute puppet?  A CuddleUpPet!

Freddy was sent one of Flair's new CuddleUpPets to try out.  The cuddly, snuggly blanket includes a puppet head which can be operated by the child in play, or by an adult as part of a bedtime routine with the friendly animal reading a bedtime story!

Our CuddleUpPet animal blanket is an elephant design.  The plush blue blanket is 28" x 39" and has a foot on each corner and a little tail as well as the fun, cartoon style, cuddly elephant head incorporated into the design.  The elephant himself looks a bit dozy but quite friendly!

Freddy instantly took to his new cuddly buddy.  He enjoyed snuggling under the blanket, making the puppet talk, cuddling the elephant like a toy and giving his trunk kisses!  It is perfect for snuggling under to watch TV.  He really loves his new toy as these photos show!

The CuddleUpPet can help make a bedtime routine for young children providing a favourite toy and cuddly blanket in one.  I think it would take more than this to get my son into a bedtime routine, even with its sleepy eyes and cosy snuggling potential.  However, it will make a good bedtime companion that can help a child feel comforted and confident at night-time.

It also makes a great travel companion for taking in the car.  Freddy loves having a blanket in his car seat so his new elephant CuddleUpPet is just perfect for that job.

The puppet element of the CuddleUpPet adds a new dimension of interactivity.  Fred loved it when I made his elephant 'talk' to him and he quickly worked out how to do it himself.  Although his hands are a bit too small to control the mouth, he was perfectly happy making the whole head move and interacted with his furry friend in some imaginative pretend play.

It is a real novel idea to combine a toy and a blanket to provide cuddles, comfort and fun in one.  Freddy definitely has given it a big thumbs up!

CuddleUpPets are just £19.99

Goodnight Friends Upsy Daisy Review

In the Night Garden is a massive favourite with pre-schoolers who love the friendly characters from the CBeebies show.

We were sent a Goodnight Friends Upsy Daisy toy from Toys R Us.  The soft, cuddly, plush Upsy Daisy doll  wears a removable nightdress and comes with her own Daisy Light that really lights up (batteries included!)  She is a good likeness of her TV Show counterpart.

Freddy was hoping to find an Iggle Piggle in the box, but was happy to play with "Iggle Piggle's friend" instead!  There is also an Iggle Piggle version of the Goodnight Friends with pj's and lantern.

As well as the Daisy Light, Upsy Daisy comes with slippers, a story book and her skirt.

The Daisy Light turns on by pressing a button which was easy for Freddy to do.  The soft glow turned itself off after a while so no danger of draining the batteries accidentally.

Upsy Daisy is a sweet bedtime toy that children will enjoy tucking up in bed. Getting her changed from her skirt and into her nightdress and slippers before reading her a bedtime story can help little ones learn about night time routines. The gentle glow of the Daisy Light might help settle your toddler down to sleep at night alongside Upsy Daisy.

The set is really nice and will definitely delight ITNG fans.

For £19.99 from Toys R Us, Goodnight Friends Upsy Daisy would be a lovely gift.  Freddy will be donating his Upsy Daisy to a little girl we know who I'm sure will love her!
