Our Interactive Film Experience with Pee-wee Herman

Being part of the Netflix Stream Team is always a whole lot of fun! Not only do we get to watch all the great Netflix movies and shows, but we also get to take part in some pretty cool activities. This weekend, we enjoyed an interactive film experience while watching the Netflix Original film "Pee-wee 's Big Holiday"! We all sat down together to watch the movie with a little added Netflix magic.

We had previously received a parcel in the post filled with some sealed, numbered boxes and a movie road map with details on when to open each box during the film. So we excitedly started by opening up the first box, which contained two Pee-wee Herman t-shirts for Kezia and Freddy and then began watching the movie.

Pee-wee's Big Holiday on Netflix

Pee-wee Herman is an iconic American comedy classic from almost 30 years ago, set in the surreal, alternate reality 1950's town of Fairville. Big Holiday has resurrected the character for a whole new audience to enjoy. Pee-wee's zany, child-like view of the world makes his experiences seem bigger and more exciting than those of an average man, resulting in some classic comedy moments and quirky encounters.

Pee-wee's Big Holiday tells the story of his epic trek across the country to get to New York for the birthday party of Joe Manganiello (the actor from magic Mike and True Blood who plays himself in the film) following a chance encounter in Pee-wee's dad's diner when the super cool, manly Joe comes in for a milkshake. The pair share a strangely intense and more than slightly camp bromance that sees Pee-wee challenged to push himself out of his comfort zone. Pee-wee's sheltered and idyllic life in Fairville is turned upside down on his journey as he finds himself in a series of bizarre situations including being kidnapped by female bank robbers, almost getting married off to a farmer's daughter, getting caught up in the Amish community and falling down a well! Will he make it to Joe's birthday bash in time?!

Throughout the film we got to open our boxes and absolutely loved each activity. We shared milkshakes with Joe and Pee-wee in the diner, we chomped on root beer barrel sweets and Ruffles potato chips whenever the characters did. We played with squeaky balloons, waved a Fairville banner and wore Pee-wee friendship bracelets as we joined in with Pee-wee's journey to Joe's party.

Pee-wee's Big Holiday on Netflix

Pee-wee is a man-child and an innocent, who takes on the world in this movie that is all about friendship, destiny and self-discovery. The humour is silly and a bit bonkers, with an added quirky charm and a sense of wonder.  The cartoonish quality of the visuals appeals to kids and there are many crazy, off the wall moments that will get them giggling throughout. Fans of Pee-wee Herman will enjoy seeing the role reprised by actor Paul Reubens and will also be able to spot some familiar faces from Pee-wee's last movie the 1985 Big Adventure.

I love the idea of the interactive viewing experience, and it is something I am going to try to do again myself to make family film nights extra fun. You can watch Pee-wee's Big Holiday now on Netflix.

Why Mums and Netflix are the Perfect Mix!

March has brought us Mother's Day and International Women's Day so Netflix have challenged us kids from Inside the Wendy House to write a guest post to honour our Mum and give her a day off from blogging. This #lilStreamTeam post is brought to you by us - Ella 19, Kezia 13 and Freddy 6 and is all about why we think our mum is as good as Netflix.

Why is Mum like Netflix? - by Ella

  • Like Netflix, Mum is available for us 24/7. Anytime day or night.
  • Mum is entertaining...she makes us laugh, we have a lot of fun and makes our life action packed.
  • Like a Netflix Night In, she gets all of us together for quality family time.
  • Like a Netflix documentary, Mum is a mine of information and knows a lot of random stuff about all sorts of weird and wonderful things.
  • Like binge watching a Netflix series, we can spend hours with Mum and not get bored.
  • Mum fills our needs - whether we feel sad, are in a crazy mood or need a good laugh - she can give us what we need to cheer us up or calm us down.
  • Streaming on Netflix reminds me of Mum because both are efficient, flexible and get the job done!
  • Mum is an original - just like a Netflix Original Series.
  • In our home, everybody loves Netflix and everybody loves Mum.

As many fascinating facts as a Netflix Documentary

Which Netflix Character is Mum like? - by Kezia and Freddy

Regina Mills

Once Upon A Time is a favourite Netflix TV show for us to watch together and Mum reminds me a lot of Regina Mills. I'm not saying she is an Evil Queen or anything, but like Regina she would do anything for her family. She'll do whatever it takes to keep us all safe and looked after. She will unleash her inner evil queen if she has to. She is a real hero. (And like Regina she also fancies Robin Hood!)

I wish my Mum had Regina's magic. Imagine what could be done with that purple, swirling power. She could conjure up 5 Seconds of Summer in our living room for a private concert. But instead of dark magic, Mum has the power of love and can help us to achieve things, look after us, keep us fed, share our problems and dreams and talk to us about anything. She's got our backs and she doesn't need a magic wand to make us feel loved and protected. Like Regina, mum wants us all to have a Happily Ever After and will do everything in her power for us to get that.

OUAT, Netflix
If Mum was Regina Mills from OUAT.

Mummy Pig

One of Freddy's favourite shows on Netflix is Peppa Pig, where Mummy Pig is the hardworking mother of the family. He picked Mummy Pig as the character most like our mum. She has to deal with Daddy Pig and her two little ones, keeping everyone in line. She sorts out family problems, helps friends and neighbours and spends time with Grandma and Grandpa Pig. Mummy Pig also likes cake and computers. This is why we think our Mum is a lot like Peppa's mummy!

Freddy says "My mummy and Peppa Pig's Mummy are both nice and kind!" How sweet :)

Peppa Pig, Netflix
Mummy is a lot like Mummy Pig

Mums deserve to have nice things and letting her pick what to watch on Netflix, snuggled under her fleecy Netflix blanket for a well deserved rest is a good way to show her you care. Even if that means binge watching How to Get Away With Murder, having a documentary marathon or watching some film she used to love in the 80s (when all you want to do is watch Pretty Little Liars - who is A?!?!)

Well mum, I hope you like this post as much as we enjoyed creating it. We love you millions!!  Thank you for being so awesome!!!

Shadowhunters - new to Netflix #StreamTeam

For teens looking for something fresh and new to watch on Netflix, Shadowhunters is a new TV show based on the bestselling fantasy book series: The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The series follows Clary Fray, whose life is turned upside down on her eighteenth birthday, after discovering that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters - humans born with angelic blood, who protect humanity from demons. After her mother is kidnapped, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery in the Shadow World, along with her best friend Simon, while learning how to hunt demons, under the guidance of the very handsome but mysterious Shadowhunter Jace Wayland.

Netflix

Here is a beginner's guide to the lingo of Shadowhunters, so you can work out who is who and what is what!

Shadowhunters – Half human, half angel hybrids sometimes referred to as Nephilim. These warriors are responsible for hunting demons, protecting humans and keeping order in the Shadow World.

Downworlders – Half-demonic creatures such as warlocks, werewolves and vampires who live in the Shadow World. They have human souls and live alongside Shadowhunters.

Mundanes – Mere mortals who do not have the ability to see the Shadow World. They are referred to as "Mundies" for short.

The Clave – Collective name for the political body of active Shadowhunters. It is the Clave’s duty to protect the helpless, safeguard humanity, and ward of evil on Earth.

The Accords – Peace negotiations written to maintain order among Shadowhunters and Downworlders.

Runes – Symbols used by Shadowhunters to grant supernatural powers or protection. They can be drawn onto any surface and are often tattooed onto their skin before fighting demons.  The older or more experience a Shadowhunter, the more Runes they will have on their body.

Stele - A slim cylindrical wand used by Shadowhunters to draw runes.

Seraph Blade – A slim blunt tube that once activated transforms into a sharp, clear glowing hilt. Each blade is named after an Angel and is activated when the name is called. Shadowhunters use these in battle.

Shadowhunters has a cast of good looking young characters thrown into an exciting fantasy storyline with plenty of action to keep the viewers entertained. It is perfect for a younger audience with a great soundtrack, beautiful visuals and plenty of attitude.

Watch Shadowhunters now on Netflix, with new episodes added weekly.

Must Watch Documentaries on Netflix #StreamTeam

My Netflix viewing has been completely dominated by watching the powerful, gripping documentary series Making a Murderer. The tale of wrongful conviction, police corruption, a flawed judicial system, evidence tampering and false confessions is the stuff of a work of great crime fiction - so the fact that it is all true makes this one of the most compelling programmes I have watched in a long time.

The case of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey has gripped Netfix audiences, garnering them lots of support across the world. Watching it sets you on a journey of emotions from anger to disbelief to frustration as you question everything. Filmed over a decade, it includes footage from the interrogation rooms, the courtroom, recorded calls from jail and press coverage from the time, making it utterly authentic.

Making a Murderer stays with you long after you finish the series. I have researched the case online, reading transcripts, developments and theories that viewers have come up with. There is a Reddit thread dedicated to the case and many a meme has been created in honour of the show. I have my own ideas about the case, which I discuss at length with my daughter who is studying Criminology at university. It has highlighted so much that is wrong with the system and gives you an insight into how the pressure and desire to make a conviction can distort a criminal investigation and prevent the truth from ever being discovered.

If you haven't seen it - you simply must watch it!

Blackfish is a documentary focusing on the controversial captivity of Orcas in parks such as Seaworld, and the potential dangers it poses not only on the whales but also on the humans who come into contact with them.

Viewers are shown archive footage of the capture, training and captivity of these intelligent, sentient creatures who suffer from great distress often resulting in extreme aggression and violence. The documentary features a male killer whale called Tilikum, who is responsible for the deaths of three individuals including a renowned whale trainer, Dawn Brancheau.

Much of the footage is shocking and you question who the real monsters are - can you really blame the Orcas for these acts of extreme violence or should we look closely at the organisations that oppress and exploit these creatures for money-making entertainment purposes?  Blackfish is an impassioned documentary that makes you change the way you look at performing killer whales in captivity.

Food Inc is a graphic look at the food industry in America, focusing on the damage done by corporate farming carried out on a vast scale for enormous profits, with little regard for consumer health, animal welfare, employees' rights or the environment. As they gain greater control of the global food market corporations are mass producing food cheaply with little regard for the negative consequences and catastrophic impact they are having on the world or humanity itself.

With the majority of food production carried out by a handful of these secretive corporations, the standard of production relies on cheap processes that rely on cruelty and exploitation to maximise profit rather than on quality. Exploitation extends to the underpaid workers, to the indebted farmers, to the inhumanely treated animals and to the consumers who are fed substandard products.

Watching Food Inc reminds us all of the value of quality food: slow grown, organic, locally sourced produce rather than chemically altered food such as burger meat that contains bleach to remove dangerous toxins to make it fit for human consumption.

I always have my belief in my family's vegetarian lifestyle reaffirmed when watching documentaries like this. Even though this is an exposé of the America food industry, it isn't difficult to see similarities in the UK markets. With the rise of obesity and diet related diseases, we should all take stock of what we eat and how that food is produced.

Montage of Heck is a documentary about the life and career of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Packed with home movies, recordings, artwork, animations, readings from journals and photos, it gives you an incredible window in to Kurt's childhood, formative years and his rise to fame.

His happy early years soon gave way to feelings of rejection and Kurt became a very troubled teen, but his desperation to be loved and accepted and his creativity shone through. It's very sad to witness his early downfall and the failure of his family to provide the support he needed. You can't help but wonder whether he could have been saved - but without his tortured soul we may have never seen the genius of Nirvana.

The insight into Kurt's character and his relationships is amazing. Viewing his journals allows us a rare glimpse into his wildly active mind, filled with lists, lyrics, rants, cartoons and ideas. His mental problems, ill health and addictions saw him spiral into darkness, but his creativity and talent were a beacon of light that escalated him into becoming a legend and reluctant spokesperson for a generation of disaffected youth.

Cobain's story is such a tragedy, and this documentary reveals a vulnerability and a desire to be loved that speaks of his humanity, fleshing out the grunge rock legend into a human being with desires, hopes, flaws and insecurities. His relationship with Courtney seemed to be the catalyst for his demise, although it offered the thing he always craved - family. Some people are just not meant for this world, but Kurt's legacy lives on.

Kurt Cobain

Visually this is a stunning documentary featuring interviews, real life footage and incredible animations to accompany audio footage. It's a must see for fans offering a rounded view of the man and avoiding any conclusions or answers to the question of his rise and fall. in fact the factors surrounding his death are not explored at all. Instead it provides a chance to witness the pivotal moments and to see the man himself in a raw and real documentary with an amazing soundtrack.

This documentary is authorised by Kurt's widow Courtney Love and his family and finishes a month before his untimely and tragic death, so any conspiracy theorists who believe his death was murder and not suicide, may be left wanting by the final cut.

My Christmas Netflix Picks

I can hardly grasp the fact that it is already December and Christmas Day is less than three weeks away. So while I sit and wonder where 2015 has gone, I am getting myself into the Christmas spirit by watching some top festive entertainment on Netflix. I love cuddling up on the sofa under a blanket with some popcorn, to watch a Christmassy film with the family.

Check these movies out now and join in with the Netflix festive fun.

A Christmas Carol

Jim Carrey voices Ebenezer Scrooge in this 2009 Disney version of the classic A Christmas Carol. Mean, cruel and miserly Scrooge learns the power of opening his heart after being confronted by three ghosts on Christmas Eve, that show him the error of his wicked ways. It's quite dark and a little bit scary in parts, but the message is still as relevant today as it was when Dickens first penned this classic tale.

Santa Clause

Tim Allen stars in this great festive comedy. When he accidentally kills Santa he evokes the Santa Clause and has to take the place of St Nick himself. There are lots of laughs, especially as Allen's waistband expands and his beard grows to suit the role.

Jingle all the Way

Arnie plays a desperate dad trying to buy his son the must-have toy for Christmas. On his way he encounters a stressed out mailman, played by Sinbad, and it becomes a meteoric battle of wits as they try to get their hands on a Turbo Man action figure. There is lots of slapstick comedy and some hilarious action as they go to extraordinary lengths to get the toy. The finale is just fabulous and you get to see Arnie dressed as a superhero!

Home Alone

This Macaulay Culkin classic is such a timeless movie, that each of my children has in turn loved watching it over the last twenty years. Now it's Freddy's turn to watch Kevin's elaborate plan to defend his home against the bungling burglars, after being left home alone at Christmas. It's slapstick, it's funny and it has just the right amount of sentimentality to give it real heart. It's a Christmas must-see movie.

Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas

Join Mickey and friends as they star in three festive stories: Mickey and Minnie's Gift of the Magi, Donald Duck Stuck On Christmas and A Very Goofy Christmas. In the Gift of the Magi, Mickey and Minnie both try to get each other the perfect gift for Christmas even if it means parting with something they love. In Stuck on Christmas, Huey, Dewey and Louie relive Christmas over and over again in a Groundhog Day time loop until they appreciate the true meaning of Christmas. In A Very Goofy Christmas, Goofy and Max are awaiting Santa's arrival while neighbour Pete mocks them for believing. But Pete soon has to eat his words. It's great Disney storytelling that keeps little ones happily entertained.

My Netflix Picks this Halloween #streamteam

I love Halloween. All that spooky and scary stuff is right up my street, which is why I enjoy tailoring my TV viewing to suit the season. Netflix has some fantastic films and series that are just perfect for this time of year when you want a bit of horror in your life.

Netflix, George Fairbairn
Watching scary movies Inside the Wendy House - by George Fairbairn

Here are my top picks:

Scream - the series

The Scream movie franchise is one of the big horror hits of the late 90s, featuring the horror obsessed killer in a Scream mask. The new Netflix series is a TV adaptation of the slasher genre featuring teens living in Lakewood, a small town with a horrific crime spree in its past.

After a cyber-bullying incident, a popular high school student Nina is brutally murdered, beginning a new wave of violence in Lakewood. A group of teens is drawn into the killer's game, and they use their wits to try and stay alive, unmask the perpetrator and stop him for good.

The cast is full of upcoming young actors with the role of Nina being played by Bella Thorne. It's a great teen drama, fast paced, very modern and infused with iconic slasher horror.

Circle

This movie is not your typical action packed horror film, instead it is shot in real time with just one setting for the majority of the action. Fifty people find themselves in a room standing in a circle around a central glowing device that fires out a bolt of energy every two minutes that kills whoever it hits. The people soon realise they can control who is killed and so enter into a fraught dialogue trying to decide who deserves to live or die. Alliances are made and tempers rage as the group battles to survive, knowing only one person can leave with their life. Who will walk out of the circle? The pregnant lady? The child? The cancer survivor? The soldier? Or someone else?

Circle is a bold film that doesn't rely on conventional thinking to shock and surprise its audience. It is quite slow paced, but very compelling. It doesn't give you any back story nor does it explain why they are in their predicament, instead it is what it is, and you go along with the confusion, frustration and fear of the people in the circle.

American Horror Story

AHS has mastered the art of mashing up horror genres and creating visually stunning, utterly shocking and beautifully crafted masterpieces with incredible storytelling and great acting. The series has been groundbreaking with each season taking the actors into a whole new world of horror. Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show are all available on Netflix. Each series is completely different and exquisitely enjoyable. I can't praise this series enough and I absolutely adore Evan Peters who stars in all the seasons in various roles.

Netflix, scary clown
Ella as Twisty the Clown from AHS Freakshow

For the kids, Netflix has the excellent spooky show Goosebumps to provide the Halloween thrills. My older children used to watch the TV show and read the books when they were younger. Now thanks to Netflix, my younger kids can enjoy the creepy stories too. Other picks for children include Wallace and Gromit - the Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Monsters University, Tweeny Witches and Monster vs Aliens.

Netflix has a huge range of great horror films available to view on Netflix this Halloween including Carrie, World War Z, Saw, Zombieland, The Omen, My Bloody Valentine, Friday the 13th and Babadook which are all worth a watch.

It is easy to find horror films on Netflix by clicking through the genre selection. There are loads to choose from that will let you enjoy a scary movie marathon over Halloween. Have fun and enjoy!!

Netflix and Chill - what I'm watching this month #streamteam

This month, we have discovered a new show, enjoyed some great films and revisited an old favourite on Netflix. Here is my pick of the Netflix crop.

Mockingjay Part I

Jennifer Lawrence is back as Katniss Everdeen in this installment of the Hunger Games. Battle weary and traumatised from her explosive participation in the last games, Katniss is living in District 13, while Peeta and the other surviving tributes remain in the Capital, prisoners and political pawns of the regime. Under the guidance of President Coin, Katniss becomes the Mockingjay, the face of the revolution, inspiring other districts to rise up against the Capital. A daring rescue and a fierce battle ensue as the revolution gains momentum. A shock ending leaves us on tenterhooks.

I am so looking forward to Part II and the final chapter of the Hunger Games. It's great to see the films on Netflix and Kezia and I have enjoyed watching them together. They are great family films to watch with older kids.

Hunger Games

Sons of Anarchy

After we finished watching Breaking Bad, Ian and I were on the search for something new to watch together in bed. We have just discovered Sons of Anarchy and that is filling the Walter White sized hole in our life!

Sons of Anarchy stars the rather gorgeous Charlie Hunnam as Jax, a member of the outlaw motorcycle club in the town of Charming. Since becoming a single dad and discovering his own father's journals, his loyalty becomes tested as he questions the increasing lawlessness of the Sons of Anarchy and how the club is run. The group run a lucrative illegal arms dealing business and keep drug dealers out of town, usually with violent consequences. Jax's mum and stepdad, who is president of the Sons of Anarchy, like to keep things old school and the conflict between them impacts upon the club and their personal relationships.

We're not very far into the first season (the first of seven!) but already we love the way it's filmed and think the characters and scripting are excellent. Jax is a tough but likeable character who takes no nonsense and fights for what he believes in. His mum is a formidable character that you both love and hate, who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. How she treated Jax's ex wife in the first episode was utterly shocking!

I am looking forward to seeing how the show progresses. I've heard such good things about it.

SOA

Skins

I've been revisiting the series that spawned the successful movie actors Nicholas Hoult, Dev Patel and Jack O'Connell. Skins started in 2007 and ran until 2013. The exploits of the years 12 and 13 teenagers, feature some controversial storylines including teen pregnancy, mental illness, eating disorders, suicide and family breakdowns, fuelled by a cocktail of drink, drugs and sex. It's hard hitting stuff, superbly acted and emotionally charged, with some great comedic moments thrown into the mix. The characters are both believable and likeable and you laugh and cry alongside them.

Every two years the cast changes, as the characters leave school and new kids start year 11 at the Bristol college, The series has seen some fantastic breakthrough performances from the cast and the scripts are powerful.

Skins is a series that gave older teenagers and young adults a drama that they could really relate to, but even at my age I enjoy the gritty realism of the show. A number of top British actors including Peter Capaldi and Harry Enfield guest star and it's always fun to spot them make an appearance!

Dinotrux on Netflix #streamteam

Netflix have a great new show that is proving to be really popular with my six year old son Freddy. Dinotrux is Dreamwork's Animation's new action packed series featuring some awesome half truck, half dinosaur characters.

Netflix

The story centres on the adventures of Ty Trux, a huge Tyrannosaurus Trux and his tiny Reptool friend Revvit. When Ty's valley is destroyed by a volcano, he goes is search of a new place to call home. Injured and hungry he meets Revvit, who helps Ty and becomes his trusty sidekick and best friend.  They join with other Dinotrux and together they unite to defend themselves against big, bad bully D-Structs, an angry Dinotrux intent on destroying everything they have built.

The animation is incredible and the dinosaur/truck hybrids are just so imaginative. We love Ty's wrecking ball tail and the rock crusher jaws and Revvit's tape measure tongue!

The Dinotrux have problems to solve and use teamwork to find a solution, each employing their own skills along the way to build the things they need. This is a great message for kids showing the value of working together for the greater good. It also explores the theme of friendship, as the different Dinotrux learn to live together.

Freddy's favourite character is Revvit because "he is littler than all the Dinotrux, he is funny and nobody is scared of him and he always does good things!" One of Fred's favourite episodes in when Revvit ends up getting accidentally eaten by a hungry rock eating Dinotrux. We get a great look at the internal workings of a Dinotrux's digestion system. Tense stuff!

Dinotrux is definitely a great series that will help entertain the kids in the last days of the summer holidays. It's helped see us through these last few wet, rainy days.

How Freddy Trained His Dragon #NetflixStreamTeam

Dreamworks Dragons - Race to the Edge

To celebrate the launch of Dreamworks Dragons - Race to the Edge, Netflix have set the Stream Team bloggers a challenge so we can experience our own dragon adventure.  We have been sent our very own Toothless to see if we can train him as well as his trainer Hiccup can. So Freddy was given the job of being our head dragon trainer and of course, he watched some of the brand new Netflix show to get some inspiration on how to fulfill his challenge.

When it comes to training dragons you have to ensure they have plenty of fresh air and exercise to keep them feeling in clover!

How to train your dragon

Toothless went on a lot of adventures with his new trainer, including a visit to school for Show and Tell where he met the children of Class 1. He learned the importance of making friends and getting on with others...even when one of those others is the Armoured Dragon who he battles against!

How to train your dragon

The importance of learning to read and write is crucial when training dragons and Freddy helped Toothless learn his phonics. What a clever dragon!

how to train your dragon

Although Toothless has had some good training with Freddy, he can still be a bit of a cheeky dragon getting up to mischief! Sometimes his behaviour left a little to be desired, but a stern look from his trainer brought him back on the straight and narrow.

Toothless, how to train your dragon

After a hard day's training, it's time for bed.  A good night's sleep is important for any trainer and their dragon in training to keep them refreshed for the day ahead. After all the giggling had subsided, Freddy and Toothless would snuggle up in bed.  Sweet dreams boys!

how to train your dragon, toothless, dragon

You can catch the series of Dreamworks Dragons - Race to the Edge on Netflix now. It is a great series for kids. It is an adventure laden story about what happens before How To Train Your Dragon 2. Toothless and Hiccup explore the world beyond Berk, discovering ancient secrets and yet undiscovered dragons whilst evading the marauding dragon hunters. Great fun!

What we're watching on Netflix #NetflixStreamTeam

We're in our first month of having Netflix and it is not an exaggeration to say that it has totally revolutionised the way we watch our TV. Having a whole library of box sets and films ready to view 24/7 means we are never at a loss of what to watch. There is so much choice and each of us has our own profile where we can set up lists and get recommendations of what to watch based on our viewing history.

Here are some Netflix recommendations of things we are enjoying this month, one for the grown-ups and one for the kids:

Once Upon A Time

My girls and I are absolutely loving this series - so much so we are already up to season 3! The story revolves around the fairytale characters of the Enchanted Forest who have been transported to the 21st century because of a curse meted out by the Evil Queen Regina. The characters have no memory of their past lives and are destined to live the same day over and over again until Emma Swann arrives in their little town of Storybrooke.

Netflix

The episodes tell the story of their present day adventures and struggles alongside flashback episodes which serve to develop the plot and the characters. It is brilliantly dark, with some fabulous twists on the traditional fairy tales we know and love.

Our favourite character is the wonderfully enigmatic Rumplestiltskin aka The Dark One played by Robert Carlisle. He is brilliant as the cowardly, simple man turned darkly magical villain. His storyline is one of the most compelling, combining his strong love for his son with his fear of being powerless. This dilemma leads to some powerful story telling.

There is a huge cast featuring some well known faces. We are forever checking out IMDB to find out what other things the actors have been in.

Larva

This cartoon from Korea has utterly captured Freddy's imagination and is his recommendation for the top Netflix TV show for kids. It features Red and Yellow, a pair of larvae who live together alongside a handful of other creepy crawlies. Each episode features four 2 minute short cartoons starring the greedy, food obsessed pair. Yellow is a bit slow and foolish and often receives abuse from his smaller, more impetuous friend Red in their quest for full bellies. Their relationship may be competitive and contentious, but when it comes to the crunch they are best friends.

They eat or play with things they find that fall through the grate of their underground home and search for food in the house, which they sometimes spend time in.  They also try to avoid their adversary the hungry frog and stay one step ahead of Black the stag beetle and Brown the dung beetle. There is no dialogue but the two limbless creatures manage to convey a full range of emotions through their own brand of visual slapstick humour using their facial expressions and tongues!

Netflix, kids tv

Larva is truly weird but strangely compelling to watch!  It is full of visual gross out humour involving snot, poo, burps and farts - this is obviously something that Freddy finds hilarious. There is also a lot of slapstick violence with bugs pummeling each other and fighting over food. But there is also a message of the importance of friendship that sometimes provides some heartwarming moments for the grubs.

New on Netrflix this month is the third season of Orange is the New Black, brand new drama Sense8, season 6 of Pretty Little Liars and horror film Insidious. On June 26th a new original show Dreamworks Dragons: Race to the Edge comes to Netflix.

Red Riding Hood Purse from Totally Funky

I am currently immersing myself in the excellent series Once Upon A Time on Netflix and loving every minute of it!  It is a great story involving all the favourite fairytale characters from the stories of our childhoods, who have been cursed and sent into the 21st century with no memory of their true pasts or identities. It is pure escapism and dark fantasy at its very best.

With my new found love of fairytales, I was delighted to receive a brilliant delivery from Totally Funky, the online gift store selling cute, quirky and unique gifts that are bound to make you smile.

I received a Red Riding Hood wallet from the Once Upon A Time range of bags (no relation to my new favourite TV show however!), featuring characters from the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

Totally Funky, fairytales

The design features simple, doodle style drawings of the characters from the story, Granny, Red Riding Hood, the Huntsman and the Big Bad Wolf. I love the simplicity and how effective the design is at conveying the story. There are some lovely details including use of phrases from the story, Granny and Red zip attachments and the Once Upon A Time tag. The 'What big teeth you have - all the better to eat you with!' motto, adds a little element of darkness, a nod to the sinister edge of the original fairytale that has inspired the design.

The wallet has a zip fastening, opening up to reveal two compartments, each with several slots for cards and notes, with a zipped compartment for coins in the centre and a popper down flap covering a handy front pocket, all with an illustrated fairytale lining.

purse, Once Upon a time, fairytale

The purse is 20 cm long, making it spacious and a good size for everyday use. It is just so pretty and really unique. I love it. There is a matching handbag as well, which is equally cute and quirky with added bows, tags and patches. The Once Upon A Time range also includes Snow White, Hansel and Gretel and The Gingerbread Man bags, each made with the same delightful attention to detail.

The purse is made from PVC with a cotton lining and costs £21.99.

You can find this gorgeous purse, the other Once Upon A Time products, along with a great selection of other cool items and great gift ideas from www.totally-funky.co.uk.

I'm part of the #NetflixStreamTeam

I make no excuse of the fact that I love my TV! I really enjoy sitting down in the evening, once the kids are in bed, to enjoy episodes of quality dramas that take me into the worlds of politics, crime, horror, romance or make believe. So becoming part of the #NetflixStreamTeam really is something quite exciting for me.

In the few days since receiving my Apple TV and setting up my subscription to Netflix I have been quite overwhelmed by the quality and choice of TV shows and films available. I'm already deeply embroiled in the fairytale adventures of Once Upon a Time and have started the epic marathon that is Breaking Bad. I've made a list of must-watch shows including Sons of Anarchy, Pretty Little Liars and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt that I look forward to discovering. Plus I want to catch up with the new season of House of Cards. There is just so much great TV to enjoy. I haven't even started making a film play list yet!

Meanwhile Freddy and Kizzy are loving having their favourite shows available, ad free 24/7!  Freddy has discovered the delights of Ninjago, Horrid Henry and Larvae. Meanwhile Kizzy is planning on binge watching Gossip Girl and 90210 on her tablet.

I will be posting regularly with my family's choices of what to watch and sharing my #NetflixStreamTeam adventures here and on my social media channels.

Netflix on TalkTalk TV

TalkTalk TV customers with a Netflix subscription have instant, easy access to a wide variety of programming from Netflix through their YouView box. Netflix features some great shows including critically acclaimed original series such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Better Call Saul and  Marco Polo alongside documentaries, comedy specials, feature films and kids' entertainment. There are lots of seasons of favourite series to rediscover, such as Gossip Girl and Dexter. All this from just £5.99 a month, with your first month free!  There is no long term contract to sign up to, so with Netflix you can enjoy top TV shows with no commitment.

For me, "binge watching" episodes of a top TV show alongside Ian, is my idea of weekend entertainment heaven!  I hate having to wait a whole week for the next installment of my favourite programmes.  Wondering what might happen next to my favourite characters, worrying about tense cliffhangers or simply wanting to know who did what to whom is like torture.  I want to watch the next episode straight away, not wait for the next scheduled weekly installment.  Netflix lets me do this instantly with its extensive library of TV series. Plus the episodes are ad free.  Other brand new shows are shown weekly, but available to watch anytime after the new episode is aired.

My current favourite Netflix show is the brilliant House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood. It's a brilliant political thriller, which follows Underwood's ruthless quest to elevate himself to a position of power and influence in Washington DC.  His manipulation of the media and his way of playing his opposition is simply brilliant.  Kevin Spacey is perfectly cast using his dashing charm to bring Frank to life.  Although you know just how ruthless, cunning and vicious he is, you can't help but root for him.  Even with blood on his hands, I am Team Frank all the way.  House of Cards is now in its third season on Netflix.

Netflix is another way to watch and enjoy TV your way.  It fits in with your schedule giving you freedom to watch anytime on demand.  There are some exclusive shows that you won't find anywhere else, making Netflix a top choice for TV fans.
