Baobab Superfruit - Good For You, Good for Africa

I am always interested in foods that have positive health benefits.  So when I was offered some of the new superfood  Baobab to try out, I was willing to give it a try!  Then I discovered that this product is also helping the African farmers who grow it, giving them an income to educate their children and provide for their families.  Villagers are able to improve their communities thanks to production and harvesting of the sustainable Baobab crop.

The Baobab tree is an unusual creation that looks upside down as if it has roots in the air.  It produces big, waxy, white flowers which are pollinated by bats.  In Africa, they call it the tree of life and it can live for thousands of years. The fruits have a hard shell and contain a fruity, powdery pulp around black seeds, which is harvested by the farmers.

Baobab powder is very nutritious, rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, Calcium, Potassium, anti-oxidants and Iron. It is low in sugar and high in fibre. It is said to strengthen the immune system, fight colds, ward of some diseases, give you energy and is a great pick me up.  A superfood indeed!  You can use it in many ways including adding it to smoothies, as an additive in baking or to sprinkle over cereals.

We've received a couple of 5g sachets to sample.  Baobab powder has a tangy, fruity flavour which enhances the taste of whatever it is added to.  We added some to a smoothie to add some extra nutrition and goodness.

Here is a recipe for Baobab pancakes  presented by African chef Malcolm Riley.  Baobab powder really is versatile and so nutritious, it is well worth giving it a try to enhance the health of your family.
