Outdoor Adventures

When you are a child the whole world is your playground and everyday is an adventure.  The sky is the limit when it comes to having fun, and it's even better when you have someone to share it with.

My two youngest children are so fortunate to have each other.  Kizzy is 8 and Freddy is almost 2.  They are inseparable and the bond they share is beautiful to witness.

For them, the idea of heaven is being outside sharing outdoor adventures.  Nothing beats the freedom of the big wide world, the sun on your face and the wind in your hair.

Armed with their imagination they can play for hours in the garden, in the park or on a family day out.  Their capacity for fun knows no bounds.  Seeing Freddy discover his environment, under the gentle guidance of his doting big sister, developing skills and making connections is wonderful.

Today in this world of technology, so many children spend their time on laptops, watching TV, texting or playing video games.  It seems that a lot of the freedom and wonder of childhood has been eroded, replaced by solitary, indoor activities.  It is so sad because there is so much to do, so much to experience and so much to learn from the great outdoors.  Families need to embrace outdoors and make their own adventures together, nurturing a love of nature and adventure in their children.

In these times where money is scarce, it costs nothing to go for a walk together.  We enjoy heading off to local beauty spots where the children can explore and let off steam.  We get exercise, fresh air and have so much fun for free!

They build dens, explore secret places and play in the dirt!  Exactly how it should be.  Discovering new ways to play is such an exciting development for a toddler.  In the outdoors there are no boundaries, no rules or regulations on how to play.  Fallen sticks become magic wands or swords.  Trees become castles, caves or top secret lairs.  That is the joy of an outdoor adventurer...the freedom of simply being what you want to be.  (Under the constant watchful eye of Mummy of course...we still have to stay safe!)

Climbing trees, sliding, swinging, playing with a ball, splashing in puddles, walking in the woods, feeding ducks, playing hide and seek or simply running around in the open air, these are the things that make a childhood special.

Outdoor adventures don't have to be elaborate, costly or organised.  Just get outside together and let your children create their own adventure doing what comes naturally!
